The other day I was watching a video about rubies(my birthstone). This led me not only to question why some months have multiple birthstones, but specifically why pearl and moonstone are under Gemini? While Pearl is a mineral deposit, both are associated with the Moon, the ruler of Cancer, which would make them appropriate birthstones for July. Then I decided to do some googling; I was aware the concept of birthstones had biblical origins(Aaron’s Breastplate); however, I wasn’t aware of what caused the types and numbers of stones to change.
*Moonstone has an ethereal and romantic appearance, it’s said to align with Juno, the Roman God of Marraige. Thus, it was added to June in the 20th-century, even though it symbolizes the Moon(among other things), which would place it in July. Pearls were linked to Venus(believed to be born in June) by the Romans. Pearls have also been referred to as Teardrops of the Moon. So my point about the connection with gemini being non existent remains.
*Ps. I like Geminis, they just happen to be the sign for June.
Originally, people rotated through the stones monthly for protection. Then the concept of single stone weraing came from 18th-century Poland. From there The Jewelers of America, formerly the National Association of Jewelers, standardized birthstones in 1912. Eventually, stones were changed or added due to the discovery of new stones as well as availability, so naturally, birthstones are about consumerism. As a lover of jewelry, I don’t have any grievances with the ploy of birthstones. I do, however, disagree with deviating from the single stone system.
