Was The Night Super Fine?

Fashion Gallery

A tribute to menswear, specifically the Dandy. The last Met Gala that was menswear-focused was in 2003.

Dandyism is a cultural movement and fashion style in which Black people use clothing and personal style, specifically the historically European sensibility of the dandy, as a form of self-expression and a way to address societal limitations. While Black dandyism existed in the 19th century, Black dandyism as a cultural movement began in the early 20th century and was inspired by dandy, an aesthetic of finding individuality “by being impeccably groomed and dressed,” from the 18th century.

This year’s Met, which is themed Superfine Black Style, Tailored For You, has raised the most money of all the galas at thirty-one million dollars to start.

Now, to be blunt, the carpet was mediocre as I expected. There seems to have been a secret memo to wear black, white, brown, or red, giving the impression there was a lack of understanding, which is unfortunately common at the Met Gala. The reveals were either underwhelming or unnecessary, and sadly, trains have become a gimmick, and only a handful of people took advantage of the opportunity to use a walking cane. The carpet was filled with safe interpretations of suits or Hollywood glamor, but not many people took advantage of the “tailored for you” aspect to interject their personal style. Homages were made to stars like Josephine Baker, Prince, and Grace Jones, among others.

The co-chairs came with solid visions, though an immense amount of work went into Pharrell’s suit jacket, paired with his ill-fitting pants, his look didn’t translate well against a sea of white & black garments. Asap was on theme, and yet looked like this event was just another day, especially as he kept his suit blocked by his coat. Lewis was impeccably dressed, I would’ve preferred his shoes to be white, exotic leather to match. Colman is always a snazzy dresser, unfortunately, his choir robe homage was not and should not have been a part of his look.

Overall, the night was successful, yet some guests could have been traded for more fashionable ones. However, that choice is on the designers. Let me know which looks are your favorite from this year.
